Place characters on the Globe
Use the Movers tab to put characters on the map when their scenes describe a setting the Globe could not place.
Most characters in most stories can't be drawn on the map automatically. A scene set on "the open deck of the transatlantic steamer, in deck-chairs" describes a place in a sentence, and there is no dot to put anyone on. In this tutorial you'll use the Globe's Movers tab to place those characters yourself, and the story will update to match.
You'll need#
- A story with places and scenes in it, usually from ingesting your notes. See Ingest your notes.
- Places already on the Globe. If the Globe is empty, press Derive map first; it uses your AI provider and asks before it sends anything.
Find who needs placing#
- Look at Globe in the left-hand menu. A number beside it counts characters waiting to be placed.
- Click that number. The Globe opens on the Movers tab.
- Read the line at the top: how many of your scenes can place their characters, and how many cannot.
- Look at the reason on each row: no setting, no matching place, or place not positioned.
A row with no setting can't be fixed on the map: the scene names no location at all. Fix it in the scene.
Place a character#
- Pick a name in the Movers list with no matching place.
- Either drag the name onto a place on the globe, or click the name and then click a place. Both do the same thing. Drop onto a place that is already on the map; empty space can't hold anyone yet.
- You're asked what the move should mean. Read the choices:
- Create a scene — … at … adds a new scene putting this character in that place.
- Teach it that these words mean … tells DunneWrite that the scene's wording names that place, which fixes every scene that uses the same words.
- Add … to the scene that is already there edits the existing scene.
- If a choice warns that the change will be lost the next time the story is rebuilt from your manuscript, take the warning seriously. Choose, or cancel.
- Check the result: the character appears on the map, and the Movers list updates.
For a row marked place not positioned, press Place on globe instead, then click where the place belongs. Places with no position also wait in a box in the bottom-left corner of the Globe, and can be dragged straight onto it.
Find people who travel together#
- Open the Globe's Audit tab and scroll to Travelling together.
- Look through the proposed groups, and the names your scenes mention that have no profile yet.
- Tick the ones you agree with and approve them. Nothing is grouped until you do.
What you've learned#
- The Movers tab lists characters the map could not place, and why.
- Drag, or click then click, to place someone; you always choose what the move means.
- Some choices last and some are replaced when the story is rebuilt, and the app tells you which.
Next#
- Open the Globe's Timeline tab to follow who was where, when.
