DunneWrite · AI and ingestion
Ingesting your notes and the review queues
Read existing notes or manuscripts into DunneWrite with an AI, then decide what joins your story bible using the review queues.
Ingesting means handing DunneWrite a pile of text it has never seen and having an AI pull out the characters, places and props in it. It needs an AI provider; see AI providers and costs.
Reading material in does not put anything into your story. Everything lands in a holding area first, and nothing becomes part of your bible until you approve it.
Running an ingest#
- Go to Ingestion Review and press Ingest a file — see the cost first…
- Pick the file. Plain text and Markdown work best, and one large file is fine. PDFs must be converted to text first; see Import a PDF.
- Say whose writing this is and what kind of material it is.
- Read the cost screen. It shows how much material there is, how much has already been read (and won't be paid for twice), and roughly how long a comparable run took.
- Press the button on that screen to start. Nothing is spent before this.
While a run is going you can watch progress or Cancel it; cancelling stops the paid work. Long runs are normal on a big pile of notes. You can move to other pages, and the progress indicator follows you. Settings ▸ Telling you when work is done can pop up a notice when a long job finishes.
Reading the same notes twice#
The cost screen lets you choose who reads this run, and on which models, for that run only. Two readers notice different things, but know three things first:
- The second reading inherits the first one's sorting. Every run starts by sorting passages into worth reading closely or not. That sorting is kept, so a second reading skips the passages the first one set aside. For a fully independent second opinion, tick Re-read everything. It costs more, because it does the whole job again.
- A second reading can replace the first one's answers, but only if you let it. Its findings land in the queue beside the first one's. Replacement happens only when you promote a record your bible already holds: the fields the new version has an opinion about replace the old ones. If unsure, promote the reading you trust and leave the other in the queue; nothing expires.
- The two readings do not merge into one. DunneWrite shows you both and you decide. Expect roughly twice the review work.
The review queues#
These pages sit under Ingest in the left-hand menu. Numbers beside a menu item show work waiting for you; they stay visible even when the group is closed.
Ingestion Review#
Everything the AI found, as candidates. Approve, reject or edit them. Approving in bulk is normal: there will be a lot. The other AI actions (Re-extract with Bible — see the cost first, Consolidate Duplicates, Infer Character Depth) also start here.
Identity Queue#
"Are these the same one?" Dictation, typos and retellings mean the same person, place or object often arrives under several names. The app groups what it suspects, and you decide. There are four resolutions:
| Button on the card | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Merge … into "…" | They are the same person, place or thing. You pick the name to keep. |
| Contain … in "…" | One is part of the other: a porch is in a house. |
| Different variants of one figure | They are two versions of the same one. |
| Different people — don't ask again (or places, or objects) | They are genuinely different. |
When more than one kind is waiting, buttons at the top let you show people, places or objects one kind at a time. Objects are easy to miss otherwise, and are usually the quickest to answer.
The Identity Queue can only ask about names that look alike. For duplicates it can't spot, use Merge into another… in the Writer's Room. Merges can be undone from the Identity Queue.
Ratification#
A fact the text stated is different from one the AI inferred. Ratification is where you bless the inferred kind, many at a time if you like. Nothing is selected for you. Anything unratified stays visibly unratified.
Quotes to check#
Claims the AI attributed to your text but could not find on the page. For each, choose Accept quote as-is, Accept — partly inaccurate, Inaccurate — rescan with another model, Not useful — set aside, or Egregiously wrong — withdraw support. Only the rescan sends anything to an AI; rescans are collected and run together as one batch.
Retcons#
A record of every value the bible used to hold, newest first: what it was, and what stands there now. It is a record, not a control panel; nothing here can be edited. To bring an old value back, use History on the record in the Writer's Room.
Every fact knows where it came from#
Open a character, place or prop in the Writer's Room and look at its Provenance tab to see which passage, in which document, each fact came from.
