Licences and licence keys
DunneWrite is free to write with; a licence turns on the AI features. How to buy, enter your key, what owning means and what a subscription sends.
You can write a whole book in DunneWrite without paying anything. No licence is needed for writing, the story bible, the timeline, the map, the review queues, or any screen that doesn't use an AI. It isn't a trial and it doesn't run out.
Also free, with no licence:
- opening a story someone sent you (Import a bundle…);
- installing a collection from a shelf (Settings › Shelves, then Install);
- Read it with your own AI: you paste your notes into an AI app of your own and bring back what it wrote. DunneWrite sends nothing to a model for this.
What a licence turns on#
A licence turns on the parts that use an AI model: reading your notes in with an AI, writing a chapter with one, and the chapter chat. It covers every model, including one running on your own computer through Ollama. Without a licence these controls are greyed out, with a line saying why and an Enter a license key link.
Turning AI off never touches your work. Everything an AI already wrote for you stays readable and editable, with or without a licence.
Two ways to get one#
Current prices are on the pricing page.
- Subscribe. Once you have paid for six months in total, you own DunneWrite. The months don't need to be in a row, and the subscription is cancelled for you when you reach ownership.
- Buy it once, and own it straight away.
One licence covers every computer you install DunneWrite on. You can cancel within 14 days; see the refund policy.
Entering your key#
Your key arrives by email, and your current key is always on the Billing page of your account.
- In DunneWrite, open Settings › License.
- Paste the whole key into the box and press Activate. Quote marks around it are removed for you.
- The key is checked on your computer, and nothing is sent anywhere. If it doesn't check out, nothing is saved and the page says why.
Remove key takes it off this computer, and AI turns off until you paste it back. Your work is not touched.
Owning it#
Once you own DunneWrite, it stops checking anything and never contacts us again.
Ownership includes 12 months of updates, from the day you become an owner. Every DunneWrite released in those 12 months keeps its AI features for as long as it runs on your computer. After that, Settings › License says Out of support: newer releases need renewed updates, and the copy you have keeps working, AI included.
While you subscribe#
Around the end of each paid period, DunneWrite checks for your renewal by itself, at most once a day. At other times it doesn't check. You can also press Check for renewal in Settings › License at any time.
Each check sends two things to license.dunnecorp.com: your licence key, and which DunneWrite
release is asking (for example DunneWrite/0.22.0, the same for everyone on that release).
Nothing identifies you or your computer, and nothing about your story is sent.
A paid period stays valid for 16 days after it ends, so a payment a few days late doesn't switch anything off. If a renewal hasn't arrived, a strip across the top of every page says so, with the date AI will turn off. If AI turns off partway through a long job, the job stops at its next request to the model and keeps everything it had already read.
Refunds#
A refunded subscription month stops counting at DunneWrite's next check. A refund doesn't undo ownership: once you've reached your sixth paid month, you own DunneWrite.
