DunneWrite
A living story bible for writers. DunneWrite keeps track of the people, places, objects and events in your work, and the source of every fact about them.
DunneWrite is a desktop app from DunneCorp that keeps a living story bible: a record of the characters, places, props, events, chapters and notes in a piece of writing, kept up to date as the writing grows.
You can build that bible by hand, one field at a time. You can also hand DunneWrite a pile of notes or a finished manuscript and have an AI read it for you, then review what it found before any of it becomes part of your bible. Either way, every fact can tell you where it came from, and every save you make is kept in that record's History.
Who it is for#
DunneWrite does not assume you are writing a novel. It works on any body of text with people, places and events in it:
- Fan fiction writers keeping a large, shared world straight across many stories.
- New authors starting from a blank page who want somewhere to put the world as they invent it.
- Working writers with years of notes, drafts and dictation that nobody has ever indexed.
- Students and readers working through a history, a biography or a long classic, who want to know who everyone is and where they were.
What it does#
- Keeps the bible. The Writer's Room holds your characters, places and props, with a History of every save and a Provenance tab showing which passage each fact came from.
- Reads your notes in, if you want it to. With an AI key of your own, or a model running on your own computer, DunneWrite can pull characters, places and props out of your material. Nothing it finds joins your bible until you approve it. See Ingesting your notes.
- Shows you the shape of the story. A Knowledge Graph, a Globe and a Timeline, family-tree questions, and tables found in your sources.
- Helps you write the next chapter with any AI. DunneWrite writes a brief of everything your story already establishes, you use it with the AI of your choice, and DunneWrite checks what comes back. See The chapter brief loop.
- Travels as one file. A whole story, including its History and pictures, can be exported as a single bundle and opened on another computer. See Stories and bundles.
What it does not do#
DunneWrite does not write your book for you. It keeps track of what is true in your story and tells you when new material contradicts it. The writing is yours.
Most of the app costs nothing to use and needs no key at all: writing, editing, searching, the maps, the graph, the timeline, and importing and exporting stories. Only the features that send text to an AI need a DunneWrite licence, and each of those asks before it sends anything. See AI providers and costs.
