Ingest your notes
Read a file of your own notes into DunneWrite, see the cost before anything is spent, and approve what the AI found.
Available30 min· Intermediate· DunneWrite 0.22.0
In this tutorial you'll hand DunneWrite a file of your own notes, let an AI pull out the characters, places and props, and then decide what joins your story bible. Nothing the AI finds goes into your bible until you approve it.
You'll need#
- A story open in DunneWrite. See Your first story.
- A provider connected and chosen under Which one reads your notes. See Connect an AI provider.
- A file of your notes in plain text (
.txt) or Markdown (.md). For a first try, a few chapters' worth is plenty. If you only have a PDF, see Import a PDF.
Start the run#
- Open Ingestion Review from the Ingest group in the left-hand menu.
- Press Ingest a file — see the cost first… and pick your file.
- Say whose writing this is and what kind of material it is. These are your own notes, so they are your own writing: canon.
- Read the cost screen: how much material there is, how much has already been read, which provider and models will run it, and roughly how long a comparable run took.
- Press the button on the cost screen to start. This is the first moment anything is sent or spent.
You can watch the progress, move to other pages (the progress indicator follows you), or Cancel, which stops the paid work. Turn on Settings ▸ Telling you when work is done if you want a pop-up when a long run finishes.
Review what was found#
- Back in Ingestion Review, read the candidates. Approve, reject or edit them. Approving in bulk is normal.
- If a number appears beside Identity Queue, open it. For each card, decide whether the names are the same one (Merge), one inside another (Contain), versions of one figure (Different variants of one figure), or genuinely different (don't ask again). Watch for cards warning that the names only share a shorter name.
- Open Ratification to bless the facts the AI inferred rather than read directly. Nothing is selected for you.
- If a number appears beside Quotes to check, open it and decide on each claim the AI could not find on the page.
See the result#
- Open Writer's Room and click one of the new characters.
- Open its Provenance tab to see which passage each fact came from.
- Open History: the first entry is the record as it arrived from your notes.
What you've learned#
- An ingest shows its cost before it spends, and can be cancelled while it runs.
- Telling DunneWrite whose writing it is decides whether material is canon or a proposal.
- Nothing joins your bible until you approve it, in Ingestion Review, Identity Queue and Ratification.
