DunneWrite · Exploring your story
Reference tools
The Knowledge Graph, Tables, Vocabularies, Lexicon and Kinship Query, for looking at and asking questions of your story.
The pages under Reference in the left-hand menu are ways of looking at a story once it has something in it. On a new, empty story they will have little to show. None of them needs an AI key.
| Menu item | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Knowledge Graph | A picture of who and what is connected to whom |
| Tables | Tables found in your imported sources |
| Vocabularies | The lists of choices the app's pickers offer |
| Lexicon | The words your story uses in its own way |
| Kinship Query | Questions that follow several family ties at once |
Knowledge Graph#
The Knowledge Graph draws your story as a diagram: who is connected to whom, who shares which objects, who was in the same place. Pick one kind of connection at a time so the picture stays readable instead of turning into a tangle.
The buttons down the left edge and along the top are icons. Rest the mouse on one to see what it does. The Inspector panel shows details of what you selected, and the Audit panel lists problems the app has found. Both panels can be resized; see Settings, accessibility and layout.
Tables#
Tables shows tables found in your imported sources, kept as tables rather than flattened into prose. You can edit them. Editing changes your copy only: the version that arrived is always kept, so nothing you import can be lost by editing it.
Vocabularies and Lexicon#
These are two different features with similar-sounding names.
Vocabularies controls what the app's pickers offer: relationship types, genders, pronouns and kinship words. Edit these lists to suit your story. Editing never changes a character or relationship that already uses a value: a deleted entry simply stops being offered, and anything still using it keeps it.
Lexicon is the words your story uses in a way a dictionary does not: the ones it invents, and the ordinary ones it bends to its own meaning. The entries are found by re-reading your own material, and you can edit anything there.
Kinship Query#
Kinship Query answers questions that cross several relationships, such as the wives who have daughters who have children who have daughters married to doctors. Start with Start from characters who…, then add one step for each tie to follow.
Kinship is stored without gender, so Wife and Husband are one tie read from each end. The answers are only as good as the ties recorded in your bible.
