In this tutorial you'll create a notebook, add a page to it, put a Rich Text canvas on the page and format some text. Then you'll quit and relaunch to see that nothing was lost, even though you never pressed save.
You'll need#
- DunneNote installed. See Installing DunneNote.
- A folder where you'd like to keep your notebook, such as your Documents folder.
Create the notebook and a page#
- Launch DunneNote. With no notebook open, you'll see the notebook picker, with Lost a notebook? on the same screen.
- Choose New notebook…, pick a folder, and name the notebook
My Notes. DunneNote creates a folder calledMy Notes.dunnenoteand opens it. - Choose New (+) ▸ Page. A new page appears in the notebook tree and opens.
- Rename the page: right-click it in the tree (or press Shift+F10), choose
Rename, and type
Getting started.
Add and format some text#
- Choose New (+) ▸ Rich Text. DunneNote confirms with "Rich Text canvas added."
- With the canvas selected, press Enter to start typing.
- Type a heading line,
My first page. Press Ctrl+Alt+1 (Cmd+Alt+1 on macOS) to make it a Heading 1. - Press Enter for a new line and type a sentence. Select a word and press Ctrl+B (Cmd+B) to make it bold.
- Start a list: press Ctrl+Shift+8 (Cmd+Shift+8), type three items, and press Tab on the second item to indent it.
- Press Escape. You've left the text, and the canvas is selected as an object again.
Move around from the keyboard#
- Add a second canvas with New (+) ▸ Sketch. Draw a quick line.
- Press Escape to leave the sketch.
- Press the arrow keys. The selection moves between your two canvases without entering either of them.
- With the Rich Text canvas selected, press Enter to go back into the text, then Escape to leave again.
Check that it saved#
- Type a few more words into the Rich Text canvas and, without doing anything else, quit DunneNote.
- Launch DunneNote again. Open
My Notesfrom Recent if it doesn't open automatically. - Open Getting started. Your heading, formatting, list and the words you typed just before quitting are all there.
What you've learned#
- A notebook is a
.dunnenotefolder you choose the location of. - A page holds canvases, and New (+) adds them.
- Enter goes into a canvas, Escape comes out, and the arrow keys move between canvases.
- DunneNote saves as you go. There is no save button.
