DunneNote · Canvases
Data Table and Editable table
The two kinds of table canvas, when to use each, and how to move data in and out.
DunneNote has two table canvases. They look alike but differ in one way: whether you can change the values. Tables are a method of displaying information; they do not compute information. Tables are an efficient method to manage lists and collections of things.
| Data Table | Editable table | |
|---|---|---|
| Created with | New ▸ Table (CSV/JSON) | New ▸ Editable table, New ▸ Paste data table, or as an editable copy of a Data Table |
| Values | Read-only | You type them |
| Rows and columns | Fixed by the file | Add row, Delete row, Add column, Delete column |
| Enter it with | Enter table | Enter spreadsheet |
| Sorting | Yes | Yes |
| Copy out as TSV | Yes | Yes |
Data Table#
A Data Table is a read-only copy of a CSV or JSON file. Choose New ▸ Table (CSV/JSON) and pick the file. DunneNote confirms with "Table added." The file is copied into the notebook, so later changes to the original file don't affect it.
Select the table and use Enter table to move around inside it. The toolbar offers:
- Sort ascending, Sort descending and Clear sort (original order). Sorting changes only how the table is shown, never the data.
- A Table or List view. List shows each row as Cards or in Detail.
- Copy table as TSV.
Making an editable copy#
To change the values, use Create an editable copy of this table. DunneNote confirms with "Editable copy created below — the original stays read-only." The original Data Table is left exactly as it was. If you don't want to see the original afterwards, turn on Hide the original table when creating an editable copy in the notebook's settings.
Editable table#
An Editable table is a grid you type into. Choose New ▸ Editable table and DunneNote confirms with "Editable table created." Select it and use Enter spreadsheet to start editing cells.
- The arrow keys move between cells. Escape leaves the grid.
- Add row, Delete row, Add column and Delete column change the structure.
- Drag a column's grip to resize it. Double-click the grip to fit the column to its contents.
- Number formats (Currency, Percent and Decimal, with a choice of decimal places) change how a value is displayed. The value you typed is what gets stored.
- Fill width stretches the columns to fill the canvas.
Pasting data in#
New ▸ Paste data table opens a dialog where you paste rows copied from a spreadsheet or another table, then creates an Editable table from them.
Search reaches single cells#
Table cells are indexed for search. A match inside a table takes you to that
exact cell: the page opens, the row scrolls into view and the cell is
highlighted. The cell: and column: qualifiers let you search cells or column
names on their own. See Search.
Tables in forms#
A table cannot be a form field, because a table holds many values and a form answer is one value. A table can be where a form's answers go: each submission adds a row. See Forms.
