Known limitations
What DunneNote 0.9.2 does not do, or does not do yet, in one place.
Available· DunneNote 0.9.2
This page collects the limits of DunneNote 0.9.2 so you don't have to find them by surprise. Some are deliberate design choices. Others are known issues.
Installing#
- Windows installers are not signed yet. Windows warns you before running them ("Windows protected your PC"). Check the SHA-256 checksum listed on the download page, then choose More info, Run anyway. See Installing DunneNote.
- Windows: tested on Windows 11 (x64) only. Windows 10 is untested.
- macOS: Apple Silicon only. There is no build for Intel Macs.
- Linux builds are not signed. Check the SHA-256 checksum listed on the download page.
- Linux: the AppImage is the most-tested build. The
.debpackage has had less testing. - First launch on macOS may show a file-access prompt and a keychain prompt, and they can open off-screen.
Notebooks#
- One writer at a time. A notebook can be open for editing in only one copy of DunneNote at a time. There is no shared editing.
- Search covers the open notebook.
- Notebooks are not encrypted on disk by DunneNote. Use full-disk encryption.
.calnotenotebooks from early development builds don't open.
Canvases#
- Tables never calculate. There are no formulas, in either the Data Table or the Editable table. Use Copy table as TSV to take data to a spreadsheet app.
- Data Tables are read-only. Make an editable copy to change values.
- The Calendar is read-only. It shows appointments from an imported
.icsfile. It doesn't sync with any calendar service, doesn't update itself, and sends no reminders. - Rich Text has no tables, block quotes or code blocks. Use an Editable table canvas beside the text instead.
- Alt text can't be edited in this version. Pictures carry an alt-text field that is searched and read by screen readers, but the toolbar has no control for editing it.
- With on-canvas controls off, a Data Table looks like an Editable table until you select it. The toolbar shows which one it is.
Forms#
- A table can't be a form field. A table can be where answers go, though.
- Drawing and picture answers keep hidden copies on the form's page, one for each such answer submitted. They don't display or get in the way, but they do add up over time. The answers table is read-only, so submissions can't be deleted from it.
Search#
- Relative dates such as "last week" aren't recognised. Use
YYYY,YYYY-MMorYYYY-MM-DD. column:matches page, group and notebook names as well as table column names.
Text layout#
- Line breaking assumes
.is the decimal point and, separates thousands. - Text flows around a canvas's rectangle, not the shape of its contents.
Backup and DunneNote Host#
- Backup is still in final acceptance testing. See Backup and restore.
- Encryption is set when a destination is first used. A destination that already holds unencrypted backups can't be switched to encrypted. Start a new one.
- There is no way to print a new recovery code for an existing destination. A new destination gets a new code.
- A refused restore is headed "Backup failed." The guidance line underneath explains what actually happened.
- The host and the app must be the same version. An older host can't talk to a newer app.
- The host needs a fixed network address. If the address changes, reinstall and pair each computer again.
- The host runs only while you are logged in on the host computer. This is a deliberate security choice.
- Host packages: macOS on Apple Silicon only, Linux on x64 only. The Windows and Linux packages are not signed. The macOS host is notarized, and needs an internet connection the first time it starts so macOS can check that.
- Only one Windows account per computer can run the host.
