The canvas kinds
The six kinds of canvas, what each one holds, and how to work inside Rich Text, Sketch and Calendar canvases.
Everything on a page lives in a canvas. There are six kinds:
| Kind | Created with | Holds | Editable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rich Text | New ▸ Rich Text | Formatted text | Yes |
| Editable table | New ▸ Editable table or New ▸ Paste data table | Values in rows and columns | Yes, values and structure |
| Data Table | New ▸ Table (CSV/JSON) | An imported CSV or JSON file | No, read-only |
| Picture | New ▸ Picture | An image, with crop, rotation, markup and hotspots | The image itself never changes; its framing and markup do |
| Sketch | New ▸ Sketch | Freehand vector strokes | Yes |
| Calendar | New ▸ Calendar | Appointments from an .ics file | No, read-only |
Tables and pictures have their own pages: Data Table and Editable table and Pictures. The other three are covered below.
Rich Text#
Rich Text is the canvas you'll use most. When you add one, DunneNote confirms with "Rich Text canvas added."
What it supports: paragraphs; headings at three levels; bulleted and numbered lists with nesting; bold, italic, underline and strikethrough; font, size, text colour and highlight; alignment (left, centre, right, justify); web links; and links to other canvases, in this notebook or another one.
Rich Text does not have tables, block quotes or code blocks. For tabular content, add an Editable table canvas beside the text.
Editing: select the canvas and press Enter to start typing. Inside a list, Tab indents the item and Shift+Tab outdents it. Press Escape to stop editing and go back to having the canvas selected.
| Shortcut (Ctrl on Windows and Linux, Cmd on macOS) | Does |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+B / Ctrl+I / Ctrl+U | Bold / italic / underline |
| Ctrl+Shift+S | Strikethrough |
| Ctrl+Alt+1 / 2 / 3 | Heading 1 / 2 / 3 |
| Ctrl+Shift+8 | Bulleted list |
| Ctrl+Shift+7 | Numbered list |
| Ctrl+K | Add or edit a link |
| Ctrl+Shift+V | Paste, matching the surrounding formatting |
| Ctrl+Alt+Shift+V | Paste as plain text |
| Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Z | Undo, redo |
Typing [[ starts a link to another canvas. See
Links and templates.
Text in a Rich Text canvas flows around canvases placed over it. See Reflow and text layout.
Sketch#
A Sketch canvas holds drawing as vector strokes, not pixels. Each stroke is recorded as a path, so it stays sharp at any size and can be undone or erased on its own. When you add one, DunneNote confirms with "Sketch canvas added."
- Choose Pen to draw and Eraser to remove whole strokes.
- Width sets the stroke width.
- Undo stroke removes the last stroke.
- Ink follows the current theme, so a drawing stays visible in light and dark modes.
You can draw with a mouse, a trackpad, touch or a pen. With a pen, pressure is recorded, and a touch from a resting hand is ignored while the pen is drawing.
Calendar#
A Calendar canvas shows appointments from an .ics file, the standard export
format of most calendar apps. Choose New ▸ Calendar, pick the file, and
DunneNote confirms with "Calendar added."
- Scales: Day, Week, Month and Event. Event shows one appointment after another, with no day grid.
- Layout: in Day and Week you can choose Standard or Layered. Layered separates overlapping appointments.
- Previous and Next step through the calendar. At the Event scale they step from one appointment to the next.
- Jump to events takes the view back to the earliest appointment.
A Calendar remembers where you left it. It reopens at the same time position, including after you switch pages.
In a form, a Calendar field answers with the day it is showing, so filling in a date means moving that calendar to the right day.
On-canvas controls#
By default, controls live in the toolbar and an unselected canvas shows only its content. To show control strips on the canvases themselves as well, turn on Settings ▸ Appearance ▸ Show on-canvas controls.
